This webinar will bring together the latest research on the field, policy reflections and business practices to shed light on how forced labour in China interacts with global trade, and what companies can do to conduct heightened due diligence.

Forced labour in China interacts with global trade

In recent years, forced labour has become an entrenched part of Chinese supply chains. The system of coercion and control has moved from internment camps to labour transfer schemes.

The webinar will focus on:

  • The latest developments on forced labour in China.
  • The impact of the US government tool: The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA).
  • Lessons from the UFLPA for the EU Forced Labour Regulation (FLR).
  • How companies should prepare for the FLR.
  • Practical advice for companies on how to address the risk of forced labour in China.

Professor Laura T. Murphy

The webinar will feature Professor Laura T. Murphy, one of the world’s leading experts on forced labour and global supply chains, joining us from the US. At Sheffield Hallam University’s Helena Kennedy Centre, she leads research uncovering how forced labour in China, particularly in particularly in Xinjiang, is integrated into key global industries such as textiles, solar, and automotive manufacturing.

She has advised governments, international organisations, and businesses on strategies to detect and address forced labour risks. Murphy previously served as a policy advisor in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, contributing to the implementation and enforcement of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA).

New addition to the programme: Johannes Maximilian Van Lingen

We are also pleased to announce that Johannes Maximilian Van Lingen will join the webinar. He will contribute with additional insights and perspectives that complement the research and policy analysis presented during the session.

Johannes Maximilian Van Lingen works with policy analysis, responsible business practices, and international regulatory developments. His expertise includes helping companies interpret and implement emerging due-diligence requirements, particularly on forced labour risks in China. He also brings practical experience on how regulatory frameworks can be translated into effective company action.

The webinar will set aside adequate time for a Q&A at the end. Therefore, we encourage all attendees to prepare your key questions in advance and make note of questions during the webinar.
