Sustainable Bamboo Sourcing from India to Europe? The Role and Challenges of Women-owned Micro-enterprises

In this webinar, we will discuss the prospects for importing companies in Europe to procure bamboo-based products from marginalized women-owned micro-enterprises.

Importing companies in Europe are usually pre-occupied with sourcing of more sustainable, renewable raw materials that reduce the environmental impact of their sourcing operations. However, what about the producer communities that are involved in the production of products based on these more, sustainable raw materials? Can importing companies both procure more sustainable raw materials from such communities and promote economic and social upgrading of marginalized women engaged in the production of such raw materials?

The discussion is based on a 3-year EU-financed research project involving the Copenhagen Business School and Foundation for MSME Clusters (FMC) in India.

At the webinar, we will discuss the above questions in the following three presentations:

  1. a) Prospects/challenges of importing bamboo products from Asia (including India)

Trine Pondal, Head of Sustainability and Social Responsibility, Flying Tiger of Copenhagen

  1. b) Teaching Case Study Presentation: How to Fly a Tiger? Sustainable Sourcing and Women’s Entrepreneurship in the Bamboo Industry in India

Shikha Bhattacharjee, Uzma Rehman, and Peter Lund-Thomsen, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark

  1. c) Challenges related to capacity building of local bamboo enterprises in India

Mukesh Gulati, Executive Director, Foundation for MSME Clusters, New Delhi, India
